Tears of the Kingdom has been promoted as being non-linear in terms of exploration and dungeons, but with a slightly more linear story than its predecessor.
The story in Tears of the Kingdom should be a lot more detailed and immersive than Breath of the Wild, too. It’s a great feature that helps to make the game more accessible. There are catch-up mechanics of sorts in terms of lore, with in-depth character profiles that give players a run-down of what the characters have experienced in the story so far.
TotK is technically a direct sequel to BotW, but according to the Nintendo team, the game has been created in a way that suits both first-time players and experienced Zelda fans. The majority of the games are great standalone titles. In fact, choosing which Zelda game to play first is not as important as it might seem at first glance. Some folk may have been wondering whether they needed to play Breath of the Wild before picking up Tears of the Kingdom, and while I’d encourage people to check out the former when possible, it’s not actually a requirement. The gameplay in Tears of the Kingdom looks incredibly smooth and combat looks very fluid, so you’re sure to notice the difference if you’re a Breath of the Wild fan. It was still a very high quality game, but Tears of the Kingdom should outshine it in terms of performance and user experience. This is largely due to the fact that the game was originally created for the Wii U before being moved over to the Nintendo Switch. While Breath of the Wild is undoubtedly one of the most memorable games that Nintendo has created, it’s fair to say that the performance wasn’t perfect all the way through. One of the key differences that you’ll notice when playing Tears of the Kingdom if you’ve played Breath of the Wild is that it should perform a lot better.
